Gramps

I recently finished the most adorable little old man sweater for my 2 year old boy.

This pattern is called Gramps and was designed by Tin Can Knits. Not to be confused with the other Gramps Cardigan I made for him before he was born by Kate Oates. :)

I fell in love with a sample of this Gramps sweater during my visit to Monarch Knitting recently and promptly cast on. I guess I just couldn't resist the shawl collar and tiny pockets. And who wouldn't love those knitted elbow patches?

I used Berroco Blackstone Tweed for the body and a lone skein of Madelinetosh Vintage floating around in my stash for the trims. I love the contrasting texture and color in the two yarns.

It is just completely adorable. I love it. And my son... well.... doesn't.

This is the best picture I could get of him in his new sweater.. and there was a lot of bribing involved to even get him into it.

Listen to my next podcast episode for the entire devastating story. :(

  4. Yeah…I can relate. My kids won't wear hand knit sweaters, either. They're 6 and 8 now, so I can't force them at this point!

  5. Could it have anything to do with the bow tie, did you try without it? I gotta tell you, the tie would be a deal breaker for me! The sweater however is totally adorable and so is your son!!!

  6. He's a cute grumpy young man! :) I'm sorry. I've had a few receptions like that... well, not that sad (Iain's only 9 months) but ambivalence! Maybe he'll change his mind!

  7. I made the same sweater for our grandson and we got the same reaction! It is adorable on him but the effort it took to get him into it was not worth it! Very funny! He had to be bribed into it for Christmas photos!

  8. OMG - cutest photo of your little boy! Sorry he doesn't like the sweater - I have definitely been there!

  9. He is just the cutest... So is the sweater. I'm so sorry he doesn't like it. My 19 month old boy loves to wear anything with a truck or a helicopter on it. Maybe a patch with a beloved picture on it would entice him to wear it? Good luck! ;)

  10. This is such a cute sweater on him. I made this and ended up frogging it because my darker yarn made my light blue trim dingy looking:( I am curious what short row method you used because your collar looks awesome. I didn't particularly like mine.

  11. I love this sweater pattern. Tin Can Knits are fantastic. They did a trunk show at my LYS a while back and it was neat to see some of their versions of Gramps. I knit one for my daughter in the 0-6 months size, and it still fits now that she's almost 7 months because she's so tiny and the sweater is so big. I may have to knit her another one for next winter.

  13. This sweater is so amazing. Maybe he will grow to love it when you don't have your camera! I knit the same sweater for my nephew. Unfortunately, I have never seen him in it! I have begged for pictures, to no avail. Thanks for sharing yours!

  14. I love the colors and your yarn choice! I also made this sweater for my son when he was two and he wasn't too happy putting it on the first few times either. I don't think it was the sweater--just typical 2 year old antics! Your photo is adorable all the same.
